Bonded Storage

When customs paperwork is inaccurate or missing, DHL is unable to complete the customs clearance as scheduled. The procedure for storing the shipment until the necessary information is provided by the customer is known as Bonded Storage

When a shipment cannot be released by customs due to inaccurate or missing paperwork, DHL Express immediately notifies the customer of the regulatory requirements. Until the necessary information is provided, DHL Express holds the shipment at the import gateway under customs bond.

Since bonded facilities have limited space, DHL applies a surcharge after three calendar days known as Bonded Storage. The receiver or importer is usually charged via a separate invoice.

Please note: we only apply the surcharge if we can’t resolve the clearance on our own and require the customer to provide the necessary documentation or license.
