Bankrun: running with Fabrice through the city of Brussels

Definition of bankrun according to wikipedia

bank run (also known as a run on the bank) occurs when, in a fractional-reserve banking system (where banks normally only keep a small proportion of their assets as cash), a large number of customers withdraw cash from deposit accounts with a financial institution at the same time because they believe that the financial institution is, or might become, insolvent; and keep the cash or transfer into other assets, such as government bonds, precious metals or stones

For your information, this is NOT what this article is about! This article is about our subcontractors and delivering flyers in the city of Brussels.

Fabrice: our subco

This bankrun is the daily delivery of flyers and parcels to our biggest customers in the financial world in the capital of our country.
Partly because of recent issues but mostly for my curiosity I asked the dedicated courier/driver to accompagny him on his daily trail.
Fabrice, a sturdy, friendly, fifty something guy, and I shook hands. Jump in, 'it's time to leave '.

Clients often wonder how we integrate our subcontractors in our company culture?

DHL engages sub-contractors  to provide specialist services, they will be contracted by DHL. However our customer will continue to have a single interface with DHL.

All sub-contractors participating in the delivery cycle comply with DHL Network Service Standards. Their performance is monitored in regular review meetings  in which DHLevaluates performance and service standards. Our client can count on the same level of security, as our sub-contractors are bound to comply with our company Road Transport and security procedures and are subject to the same security audit scrutiny as our company equipment.

Higher volumes, longer sort

Our departure has been delayed due to the huge volume that needs to be handled.with the growing B to C market he volume of shipments has grown with more than 50%. With 30 minutes of delay due to longer sort ,we head of to our first delivery address. A company that handles visa request from start to finish. We enter the building and take the lift up to the 5th floor. Fabrice knows this customer. Within 5 minutes the job is done. Up to our banking companies.
Documentary collections, letters of credits, commercial contracts etc. B to B and B-to C customers. Banks play a central role in all these transactions.

Traffic in the city of Brussels

Trafic is the second most important factor that triggers Fabrices battle to perform his deliveries in time. Brussels is a city with a lot of european institutes. On Thursday 17 and Friday 18 December for instance a European Summit of the Heads of state and Government of the European Union will be held in Brussels in the buildings of the Council of the European Union, at the Rue de la Loi. A safety zone will be set up. Only authorized persons can enter this zone on foot.

On the territory of the City of Brussels, works and construction sites can also raise problems in the neighborhood or for traffic and parking.

These kind of  activities are higly recurrent in our capital and therefore an extra challenge for our drivers to get there in time.

However, our driver is not discouraged byall of this and persues his path, doing his utmost to arrive in time in the different banks, that are our customers in Brussels.

9h30 We deliver our last parcel, guess where...on the 'grand place' in Brussels. I enjoy the magnificant view.
