Customs Services: Temporary Import/Export applies to shipments that won't stay at their destination

When a non-doc shipment is sent to a different country for a limited amount of time (with a guarantee that it will exit this country again), customs duties and taxes don’t need to be paid. DHL can arrange this procedure for a customer.

It is known as Temporary Import/Export.

Several business scenarios require only temporary import or export of a shipment. A typical example is a product sent to an overseas exhibition or machine parts sent abroad for repair. Items like this don’t usually remain in the destination country for more than a few weeks – similar to the way a person travels on a tourist visa.

In such cases, DHL can arrange for a temporary import (or export) that allows the shipment to be exempt from any customs duties and taxes, based on a guarantee that it will leave the country within a specified amount of time. Under this arrangement DHL ensures that the item enters the destination country duty-free.

When DHL is requested to manage and report a transport as an official Temporary Import/Export, an extra charge is applied.

The next “Did You Know?” will look at a different customs service: Handover to Broker.
