eCommerce summit in Brussels, Belgium

Hello ,

Today I went to the ECommerce summit at the Hilton hotel in Brussels. A selection of speakers from Belgium and abroad entered the spotlights. Some brought us intresting insights others were genuinley boring.

Always the same statements and chit chat. Speakers who are still wondering if society is changing ...please don't. At least 5 speakers confirmed us that we are living in a changing society and that change is a fact. Moreover, with more than one billion smarthphones being used all over the world, the mobile shopping trend will be increasing rapidly especially because mobile payments are taking off.

Further key words this afternoon were, social commerce, social selling, digital marketing and the generation of market places.

"Old"new stock with reservation

I was particularley keen to hear what Vente-exclusive.com had to say. Remarkable concept however.
The platform sells mainly "old new" stock at highly reduced prices and is so succesfull that you can wonder why...

  • You are forced to subscribe before you can enter the site,
  • They charge you a shipping cost of 5,95€,
  • You need to wait 10 days before receiving you parcel and
  • returning your shipments is not free!
The success of this site lies more in their excessive capturing of all events/data, developping performant tools and  leveraging an excellent organisational set up.
Interesting concept, need to get in contact with the logistics manager.

The last "green" mile

Highlight of the afternoon: the Bubble post company. What started of as a small project in Gent in 2013, has now the potential te become an international success story;

Young guy in jeans: Benjamin Reader, remarkable story. Bubble Post is specialised in first-and-last-mile delivery, and focused on giving city life back to the people. The most efficient route and vehicle for each delivery is calculated by their own inhouse developed  IT system, Focus on the key points: Price, convenience and choice. And he's right: 65%  of the online buyers prefer convenience rather than speed.
85% of logistic cariers deliver 50% of the shipments, meaning  these couriers enter the city center and not delivering 50% of their parcels.
Above that the vans of traditional courier companies are not optimally filled.

Great idea: Consolidating shipments from different carriers using ecological vehicles.

"Crowdfunding"

New creative ideas on how to fill in the last mile. The mile with the highest cost to serve due to the elements we already know (more stops, high cost to serve, decentralised deliveries, several attempts for final delivery). The idea of students bringing the shipments to your door and gaining an extra Euro. People do not want to go and look for a locker or service collection point 3 kilometers from their door. I love this project..

While going back to my car I made the same conclusion as always. Success lies in simple things. Simple ideas (like selling "old" stock and ordering after the customer has paid for their items), common sense (using bikes and electrical vehicles in the citycenter to deliver your parcels).

This weekend I continue working on my industry approach business plan. I am bursting of new ideas...
