Finally our Ecommerce plan is getting up and running.
After a first meeting with all parties involved we set out the scope, the necessary tool kit and the strategy.
My focus as a group leader is monitoring the pipeline and results, triggering the internal organisation by organising workshops etc, developing a knowledge center and attending network meetings and other activities within the ebusiness world.
This is booming business. 90% of our time is being absorbed by networking, meetings with logistic partners and keeping an eye on the ecom world.
Rethinking our B2B business model
Our company has a unique offering and platform for ecommerce business..
As a traditional CEP (courier, Parcel and express) company we developed a dense and flexible air and road network within 220 countries worldwide.
Our clients were mainly located in commercial areas , B2B. Since the introduction of ecommerce deliveries, our traditional CEP compagnies need to rethink their business model. The complete network including the linehaul and the last mile. The IT platform and visibility required in e-commerce business also posed new challenges to the logistics companies. The e-commerce companies need a unified platform wherein customer orders are linked with suppliers to logistics to payments and so on and that too on a very tight timeline.
New CEP niche players
Due to the phenomenal growth which occurred in E-commerce sales growth the traditional CEP companies were not able to fulfil the delivery promises of the E-commerce companies. This led to an opportunity area for the growth of niche CEP companies focusing on E-commerce delivery.
The last mile delivery
Within eCommerce, the most challenging area has always been the last mile delivery.
New start-ups are not only got good in funding from the market but the E-commerce companies like Snapdeal, Flipkart started investing in these companies.
Along with the delivery network some of these new companies started focusing on DC management / Fulfilment centres where again the focus was on fast turnaround times. These fulfilment centres are being planned with the latest technology (hardware plus software) to take care of the E-commerce business model (Receipt from thousands of Vendors, sorting, bagging and sending to the destination, where the same operations gets repeated).
Best of both worlds
This mix of traditional CEP companies focusing on E-commerce logistics and the trend of new Gen CEP companies coming up is a phenomenon which has been observed not only in Europe but globally. There are niche CEP companies in USA, UK, China and many other countries which are trying to shake the way traditional CEP companies operated. While many of these companies have started their operations focusing on the last mile delivery but very soon they would give the CEP giants a run of their money in the line haul, fulfilment centre operations, reverse logistics and all other areas.
So we need to watch out and look for synergies within the logistics sector!
