Here's the story...
Last July I took a huge chance of putting myself on the spot. Every day during summer, our National Belgian television broadcasts a very popular family program. People are triggered to recognize a particular place in Belgium (Flemish speaking part). Then they need to urge to that place and be there first, most of the time bringing an attribute. That evening they were in Tienen, the town where I live. My daughter was watching and yelled, 'they are here nearby. You need to take sugar with you'. And so I did, took my bike and trainers. Being in my pyjama's I took a risk. Arriving on the spot, I was sure I did take a risk because I was there first and won that evening.
Why did I take that risk, I wondered?
....Because I am older and don't care?
....Because I didn't think?
....Because I was just curious?
I was wondering what to do with this article: write about 'taking risks in life' or about 'being lucky'?
While reading som quotes on 'Why risk taking leads to success' I found out some very interesting things.
Apparently woman are not exactly known for taking risks. On the other hand the myth that that women are biologically risk-averse,we can abandon with absolute certainty,
But no matter why women avoid taking risks, doing so may be hurting us women in the long run. Many wildly successful women have spoken out about why women need to face their fears and take more chances.
So here's some advice from successful woman who did take risks. Knowing that some certainly don't pay off, it's important to remember that some do. (remember my article 'Good girls go to heaven, bad girls go everywhere').
Here a few quotes that make you wonder... (coming from Arriana Huffington, Pamela Barnes and Heather Rabbatts)
1. Great, otherwise unforeseen opportunities often come from risk-taking.
2. Taking risks shows confidence and helps you stand out.
3. We learn from risks -- and those lessons may lead us on an important, new path.
4. Success won't fall in your lap -- you have to pursue it.
5. You don't achieve your dreams by playing it safe.
6. Embracing risk-taking helps you overcome a fear of failure
I came across a lot of fine, creative, fanatastic women during my career. Almost always there was one thing missing. And that one thing was: the necessary confidence to stand out of the crowd, to speak for themself ;to receive all the credit and not their boss.
One advice:'forget that glass ceiling'.
The most important factor in determining whether you will succeed isn't your gender, it's you.
Be open to opportunity and take risks. In fact, take the worst, the messiest, the most challenging assignment that you can find, and then take control."
